What is the daily schedule like? Please consult the Parent/Student Handbook for specific information about the daily schedule, late arrivals, absences, early dismissal and other attendance issues. Generally, the morning announcements start the day right after the tardy bell rings. Each class and grade has a slightly different daily schedule. Your teacher will provide you information about your child’s lunch, recess, resource class and other important times of the day. Dismissal in the afternoon is first for bus riders, car riders and day care vans. Bicycle riders and walkers are dismissed about 5-10 minutes later.
What if my child forgets his homework/lunch/textbook/etc.? Parents are asked to drop off forgotten homework, lunches, textbooks, etc. at the Welcome Center located in the main lobby, or in the main office. These items will be forwarded to students in a timely fashion while ensuring that instructional time is not lost.
Where should I park at the school? Please park in the parking lot in front of the school, on either side of the main entrance drive. Please DO NOT park (even for a few minutes) in the loop in front of the school. This is a fire lane and must be kept clear at all times. The back parking lot is reserved for teachers.
Where should I enter the school? Please always enter the school by the main entrance. During the school day, all doors to the school remain locked. There is a buzzer system at the main entrance. Please press the button on the wall to the left of the doors and remain by the buzzer so the office attendant can see you via the camera. You will be asked to identify yourself and state your purpose at the school, and then the doors will be unlocked for you to enter. Thank you for your cooperation with this security procedure to ensure the safety of our children.
Can I drive my child to school? Yes, but please be aware that there is very limited time and many cars to get through the drop-off line. Children are dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon in the circular drive area located directly in front of the school. The PTA coordinates parent volunteers to help with morning drop-off to ensure an efficient process. Please follow instructions on the signs at school and drive all the way around the loop to the stop sign or until the car in front of you stops. Please do not get out of the car to help your child. The teacher or parent volunteer can help if you need it. This ensures we can keep the line moving quickly and get all children in the school on time. Please do not bring your child to school before 7:20am unless you have been notified that an earlier supervised activity is planned.
Can my child walk to school? Yes, but students must have parent permission to walk between school and home. A crosswalk guard is available to assist children at the designated crosswalk adjacent to the bus loop entrance. A parent or authorized adult must accompany a kindergarten walker. A parent, authorized adult or older sibling must accompany a first grade walker.
For the safety of the children, school bus service is provided to those students who live outside the 0.3 mile walking zone, and also to those who live across Wyndham Lake Drive. Henrico County Police caution pedestrians against crossing Wyndham Lake Drive during peak traffic hours (7:20-7:40am). Parents are strongly urged to accompany any children who cross Wyndham Lake Drive in the morning or afternoon.
Can my child bike to school? With written parental permission and after completion of the school bicycle safety orientation, fourth and fifth grade students who live in Wyndham or Millstone may ride their bicycles to school. Bicycle racks are located on either side of the school for student use. Information about bicycle riding is provided to fourth and fifth grade students at the beginning of each school year. For safety reasons, children who live in other neighborhoods are not allowed to ride their bicycles to school.
Can my child ride home with a friend or can a friend ride home with my child after school? Because our school buses are at their seating capacity, students may not ride a bus other than the one to which they are assigned by the Henrico County School Transportation Department. However, children may be picked up as car riders together as long as a transportation change note has been sent in to the child's teacher in advance.
Can I visit my child for lunch? Parents are welcome to visit the school dining room. However, because seating is limited, the school asks that you make lunch visits a special occasion (such as a birthday or grandparent visit) rather than a regular routine. Bringing restaurant take-out food into the dining room is discouraged. Furthermore, due to food allergies among the children, providing take-out food or other food treats to your child’s classmates is prohibited.
Can I bring a cake for my child’s birthday? Every child’s birthday is special at Shady Grove! Each day, birthday children are recognized on the morning announcements, and the birthday children are invited to come to the main office where they receive a birthday ribbon or button and choose a birthday prize from the “treasure box.” Parents are invited to join their birthday children for lunch in the dining room as a birthday treat.
Due to food allergies and health conditions of many kinds, cakes, cupcakes and other sugar treats are undesirable or even dangerous for some children. Please do not bring food treats for your child’s class to the classroom or cafeteria. We greatly appreciate your understanding and support in keeping all of our children safe and healthy.
Is there a dress code? Yes, HCPS has a dress code that is published on the county website.
Does SGES recycle? Yes, the school recycles paper and plastic items in the classrooms. The SGES PTA pays for weekly pick-up of recyclable materials, and local Girl Scout troops perform the collection and dumping into the recycling container at the back of the school.
Are there opportunities for my child to develop leadership skills? Yes! The following activities are great ways for children to get involved at the school:
